World Currency Map

About this map

World currencies, mapped

The world's national currencies cluster into a surprisingly small number of shared zones. The euro (EUR) is used across 20+ European Union members, while the US dollar (USD) is legal tender well beyond the United States — from Ecuador and El Salvador to several Pacific and Caribbean states. In Africa, the CFA franc binds 14 countries across two monetary unions, and the East Caribbean dollar links eight island nations.

This interactive currency map colours every country by the money in its pockets, so you can see the zones at a glance, compare how many people each currency serves, and open any country for its full profile. Use the list on the left to jump to a currency, filter by continent, or search by name or ISO 4217 code.

Every world currency, by country

The world's 201 countries and territories share just 145 currencies between them. The table below lists every currency in use with its ISO 4217 code, its symbol, its current value against the US dollar and each country where it is legal tender. Select any currency on the map above to highlight its zone, or open a country for its full profile.

Money does not stop at borders. 66 of the 201 countries and territories on this map spend a currency they share with someone else, which is why the map resolves into a handful of large blocks rather than 201 separate colours. Some of those blocks are formal monetary unions with a shared central bank — the eurozone, and the two CFA franc zones in West and Central Africa. Others are unilateral: Ecuador, El Salvador and Timor-Leste simply adopted the US dollar without asking Washington, a practice usually called dollarisation. A third group pegs a national currency to a bigger one at a fixed rate, so the note in your pocket says something local but tracks the euro or the dollar day for day.

Codes follow ISO 4217, which gives every currency three letters. Most are the two-letter country code plus the first letter of the currency — JP + Y for the Japanese yen, GB + P for the British pound. Codes starting with X sit outside that scheme and are reserved for currencies with no single home country, such as the East Caribbean dollar (XCD) and both CFA francs (XOF and XAF), plus the precious metals (XAU for gold).

Currency questions, answered

How many different currencies are there in the world?
145 currencies are in circulation across the 201 countries and territories on this map. 10 of them are shared by more than one country, which is why the map has far fewer colours than it has countries.
Which currency is used by the most countries?
The Euro (EUR) is used by 26 countries and territories — more than any other currency.
Which countries use the euro?
26 countries and territories use the euro (EUR): Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, Greece, Portugal, Austria, Finland, Slovakia, Ireland, Croatia, Lithuania, Slovenia, Kosovo, Latvia, Estonia, Cyprus, Luxembourg, Montenegro, Malta, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, Vatican City.
Which countries use the US dollar?
The US dollar (USD) is the official or de facto currency of 8 countries and territories: United States, Ecuador, El Salvador, Puerto Rico, Timor-Leste, Micronesia, Marshall Islands, Palau.
What is an ISO 4217 currency code?
ISO 4217 is the international standard that gives every currency a three-letter code, such as USD, EUR or JPY. The first two letters are usually the country code and the third is the initial of the currency itself — so JP + Y for the Japanese yen. Codes beginning with X, like XOF and XCD, are used for currencies shared across several countries.
What is the difference between the West and Central African CFA franc?
They are two separate currencies with separate central banks that happen to share a name and, since 1994, an identical peg to the euro. The West African CFA franc (XOF) is issued by the BCEAO, the Central African CFA franc (XAF) by the BEAC. Notes from one zone are not legal tender in the other.
